PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC, May 10, 2008 - Beach Volleyball teams from Germany and the United States will compete here Sunday for the inaugural Prague 2008 Open gold medal after upsetting higher-seeded men’s teams from Brazil and the Netherlands in Saturday’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour semi-finals.
With 11th-seeded Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann of Germany meeting 13th-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal of the United States for the US$28,000 first-place prize on the picturesque River Vltava island at the Stvanice Stadium, it will mark the fifth-time since 1995 that two teams seeded lower than 10th will compete for a FIVB Beach Volleyball title.
The last time two teams seeded lower than 10th were in a SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal match was in July 2007 in Norway, when 13th-seeded Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil defeated 14th-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richardo Schuil of the Netherlands 21-14 and 27-25. Before the Stavanger occurance, three meetings of teams seeded lower than 10th happen in 1995.
