Default Rainy start for SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Italian Open

Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy, May 13, 2008 – It was a rainy start Tuesday at the SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Italian Open presented by Abruzzo.

As usual, the tournament began with country quota playoff matches, on side courts at Lido Azzurra Palabeach, with the Brazilian, USA and Italian teams in action.

In an all-Italian affair, local idol Roberto Marini and team-mate Andrea Raffaelli lost their match against Fabio Galli and Rudy Cavaliere.

"Country quota playoffs are always difficult matches," said Galli, "because it is a single elimination tournament.

"Today we played quite well against an experienced team. We hope also for better weather for tomorrow."

Cavaliere said that he and Fabio have few international points and so their only chance to enter the main draw is to play as well as possible.

USA team Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings won against Sean Scott and Nick Lucena 2-0.

The four Brazilian teams offered three highly spectacular matches to the public, especially during an endless final, when Franco Neto and Pedro Cunha won against Benjamin Insfran and Luizao Correa, at the end of a three-set match.

Wednesday sees the start of the Qualification Tournament, starting at 8.30 a.m. and ending at 7: 30 p.m., with everyone hoping for better weather and a bit of sun.
