It was almost 9:15 p.m. local time and under the fluorescent light of Waterfront Park, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers were running, jumping and stretching.
Cars zoomed by on the nearby interstate overpass. The well-oiled machine that is the best beach volleyball team in the world was warming up for its second-round match in the AVP Crocs Tour stop in Louisville.
The duo departed the practice court, stopped to pose for a picture with some fans, then walked to the Stadium Court. The 6-foot-9 Dalhausser, at least a (shaved) head taller than anyone in the crowd, was easy to spot.
Once on the court Dalhausser-Rogers continued to be head and shoulders above the rest, beating 16th-seeded Jeff Carlucci and Albert Hannemann 28-26, 21-15.
But the duo's 20th straight win didn't come easily as Carlucci and Hannemann pushed them to the brink in the first game.
