Hamburg, July 11, 2008. Anyone who aims at winning the 2008 NESTEA European Championship Final will have to overcome the opposition of the German teams.
The teams of the hosting nation have definitely set the tone on the first competition day. German duos stayed undefeated in the first and the second winners’ rounds. Eight matches and eight victories: that is the impressive record the home heroes secured today in Hamburg.
No matter if they entered the centre court which has been arranged at the Rathausmarkt – which was today incredibly blessed by sunny weather – or the secondary courts along the Grosse Elbstrasse; simply whenever a German team stepped into the court, then the German guys left it victoriously.
Matysik/Uhmann, Brink/Dieckmann, Klemperer/Koreng, Reckermann/Urbatzka – four medals candidates come from the most successful European country in the history of Beach Volleyball. Especially convincing thereby were the matches of Kay Matysik and Stefan Uhmann. The leaders of the race for the smart European ranking finished their two matches very quickly and made it clear about their goals and expectations. The second match against the Danes Hoyer/Soderberg was for the most part a pure demonstration of their strength: “We could hardly have done more“, Matysik said contently, “we can be very pleased with the first day of our tournament here in Hamburg”. Their trainer Andre Fröhlich even realized that his guys played what might be defined as a “nearly perfect set”.
