It is illegal to intentionally put your hands up when a ball would otherwise be bounced back from the net. I used to play with a couple Brazilian girls who would try that at the net and would get called on it... It's not a new rule. It's unethical volleyball and if a ref sees you, they will call you.

Some are trying to use the new net rule to their advantage (without getting caught) but carefully pulling the net down on a low set to help the hitter. That is obviously illegal, but some try to get away with what they can. Ethical or not.
