I've been a setter for seven years now. I think that the most important thing you can do is own the court. Set every pass, even if it's easier for someone else to set (bad pass). This gives the hitters confidence, knowing that you've got the setting covered, you have confidence in making tough sets, you're the guy or gal.
I'd say next is being technically proficient. Know your sets. You can always improve your hands. I think that what holds a lot of setters back is their rough technique. Try and set as many balls a day as you can.
