Default Pavlik, Snyder prevail in Louisville

Whitney Pavlik is embracing her Louisville roots this weekend. And yesterday her father, Tom, embraced both Pavlik and her partner, Jennifer Snyder, in victory hugs after the No. 14 seeds upset third-seeded Dianne DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana in the first session of the AVP Crocs Tour stop in Louisville, Kentucky's largest city.

"Sweaty hug, sweaty hug," Whitney's father said before he threw his arms around his daughter, then Snyder.

Pavlik's parents -- Tom and Debbi -- met when they were students at the University of Louisville, where Tom played football.

"It's just exciting no matter where we are playing, [but] it makes playing in front of the family nice," Pavlik said after the 19-21, 21-16, 15-13 second-round victory in the longest women's match of the day (one hour and six minutes).

"So far they can come back," she added in jest.

Default Dalhausser, Rogers dominate again

It was almost 9:15 p.m. local time and under the fluorescent light of Waterfront Park, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers were running, jumping and stretching.

Cars zoomed by on the nearby interstate overpass. The well-oiled machine that is the best beach volleyball team in the world was warming up for its second-round match in the AVP Crocs Tour stop in Louisville.

The duo departed the practice court, stopped to pose for a picture with some fans, then walked to the Stadium Court. The 6-foot-9 Dalhausser, at least a (shaved) head taller than anyone in the crowd, was easy to spot.

Once on the court Dalhausser-Rogers continued to be head and shoulders above the rest, beating 16th-seeded Jeff Carlucci and Albert Hannemann 28-26, 21-15.

But the duo's 20th straight win didn't come easily as Carlucci and Hannemann pushed them to the brink in the first game.

Default Rogers, Dalhausser survive scare

Michelle Sturino and Peter DiNova pulled off the upset of the AVP Crocs Tour stop in Louisville today -- they beat Sinjin Smith and Hans Stolfus.

At least for one point.

Sturino and DiNova beat Smith -- the "King of the Beach" -- and Stolfus in a game of "King of the Court" during Smith's clinic on the Crocs court.

"That was amazing, that was a lot of fun," Sturino, 25, of Toronto said. "I want to stick around and talk to Sinjin and get some tips from him."

That's was Smith's clinic is all about.

"I've always enjoyed teaching people," said Smith, the 146-time beach champion who conducts his clinics at each of the AVP Tour Crocs stops. "I enjoy teaching kids and adults the right way to play because by just changing a few parts of their game it makes it much easier to play."

The clinic offered the fans instruction from Smith as well as interaction and competition with AVP Tour players, including Stolfus and women's players Dianne DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana.

Default May-Treanor, Walsh still loving L'ville

Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh want two more Louisville Sluggers.

And Sunday night, they moved one step closer to getting the bats, which come along with winning this weekend's AVP Crocs Tour stop in Louisville.

But it wasn't easy. The top seeds, and defending tourney champs, had to work overtime to beat fifth-seeded Carrie Dodd and Tatiana Minello -- 22-20, 19-21, 17-15 -- in the winner's-bracket fourth round.

"We need a pair of bats," May-Treanor said yesterday afternoon.

May-Treanor and Walsh advance to the semifinals, as did the No. 2 seeds Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, who beat the No. 6 seeds Ashley Ivy and Heather Lowe 21-14, 21-14 in last night's other fourth-round match.

Default Dalhausser, Rogers win again

Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers made it 5-for-5.

Top seeds Dalhausser and Rogers rallied from deficits in the first and third games to beat No. 2 seed John Hyden and Brad Keenan 22-20, 17-21, 15-13 on Monday afternoon in the men's final of the AVP Crocs Tour stop in Louisville.

It was the fifth AVP Crocs Tour win this season in as many tournaments for Dalhausser and Rogers, and the second straight title in Louisville for the dynamic duo.

Dalhausser and Rogers scored the final three points of the third game to improve to 25-0 this year in AVP Crocs Tour events.

"At the end of the game we pretty much clutched up and made some big plays," said Rogers, who had 30 kills and four digs in the final despite battling the flu this weekend too. Rogers and Dalhausser trailed 12-10 late in the third game, but Rogers followed up a cross-court kill with his only ace of the match to tie the score at 12.

"I'd like to thank Todd for that ace," Dalhausser said as he addressed the stadium crowd after the match.

Default Walsh overcomes injury for fourth title

AVP Crocs Tour, and rest of the world take notice, Kerri Walsh's right shoulder is fine.

Walsh, one half of the world's best women's beach volleyball team, proved that this holiday weekend in the AVP Crocs stop in Louisville.

Monday afternoon Walsh and partner Misty May-Treanor, the tournament's top seed, beat No. 2 seed Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan 21-14, 21-11 in the women's final. It was the fourth tournament title of the season for May-Treanor and Walsh in the latter's first action since sitting out to rest her surgically repaired shoulder.

"It was three weeks, and I was dying to play," Walsh said. "Misty's been so supportive and such a great partner. "But it was good to come out and show everybody that my shoulder was fine. It was okay, though, we didn't lose anything because of it and we became a better team because of it. It's getting better and better, so watch out world."
