San Diego standouts come home
It's been two years, but with the AVP Tour returning to the sandy shores of San Diego, it's also a homecoming weekend for several players.
"I'm glad we are back," said John Hyden, who moved to San Diego when his family moved to the area when he was six months old. "It's a great venue and hopefully we can get the fans out again. I grew up in San Diego (North County - Rancho Bernardo), went to high school here and then San Diego State University."

Surprises come at end of day
Change was in the air at the AVP Crocs Slam San Diego Open as for only the second time this season play was conducted in a single-elimination format for the 32 teams in both the men's and women's brackets.
"I love it," said Casey Jennings after his first win on Friday against Joe Cash and Justin Phipps, 21-14 and 21-14. "It's awesome. I don't mind it. Win or go home makes you a better team and the pressure is there every match. Nothing changes as you try to win whether it is single-, double- or triple-elimination."

San Diego's Placek moves on
Playing in the last match of the day is never fun. After all, you have to sit around, wait and wonder about what is going to happen in your next match. Yet for the No. 6-seeded women's team and No. 15-seeded men's team, playing late in the day during the second day of main draw play was perfectly fine.
"It's awesome to do it in my hometown and have all my friends and family come out," said Mike Placek of his thrilling 21-17, 11-21 and 15-13 win over No. 7 seed Ryan Marciano and Ed Ratledge. "It's kind of a surreal feeling."

Superpowers all the talk in San Diego
If you could choose to possess a superpower, which one would you want? Some say they'd like to have the ability to become invisible, others would like to have the power of telekinesis so they could move objects and perform tasks by just thinking it.
What about the players on tour? One would think that, after playing so many matches per weekend, an easy answer would be to be able to forward yourself in time to automatically be in the finals. Or maybe they'd like to be able to skip that final match and be awarded the $25,000 check that comes with the win.

Upsets continue in men's final
In keeping with the theme of upsets in the men's bracket this weekend, No. 6 Casey Jennings and Matt Fuerbringer defeated the No. 1 seed of Nick Lucena and Sean Scott in a beach burning three-game match, 19-21, 21-17 and 15-11.

Turner earns first AVP title
After winning a big sporting event most athletes like to celebrate by going to Disneyland. For Tyra Turner, celebrating her first AVP Tour title with partner Rachel Wacholder with a 21-16, 19-21 and 15-10 victory over the No. 2 seed of Jenny Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis will be commemorated by visiting a local San Diego attraction.
