Mayer and Nygaard make it look easy
The past five weeks for John Mayer and Jeff Nygaard have been a time to practice, a time to reflect and a time to figure out why their game had suffered so much recently.
While the Olympians were gearing up to represent their countries in Beijing, Mayer and Nygaard instead were working on themselves. On Friday, their extra effort was rewarded.
Seeded 12th in the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout in Mason, Mayer and Nygaard rolled through three straight matches, including two upsets against higher-ranked squads, to keep themselves in the winner's bracket as they moved into Saturday's play.

Dodd, Minello pull upset in Mason
The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Mason continued competition Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
In Saturday's men's action, sixth seeds John Hyden and Brad Keenan upset third seeds Nick Lucena and Sean Scott, moving on to face second seeds Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal. Gibb and Rosenthal secured their spot in Sunday's semi-finals, defeating Hyden/Keenan in and exciting three-game match, ending 21-18, 17-21 and clinching the victory with a 15-12 win. Hyden and Keenan will match up against eighth seeds Casey Jennings and Matt Fuerbringer on Sunday morning for a spot in the semi-finals.
On the women's side, the contenders' bracket was whittled down Saturday morning. Eighth seeds Carrie Dodd and Tatiana Minello unseeded fifth seeds Rachel Wacholder and Tyra Turner in three, 21-15, 19-21 and 15-12. The sixth and seventh seeds battled it out in the final women's match of the day session as Angie Akers and three-time Olympian Holly McPeak topped Diane DeNecochea and Barbara Fontana 21-14, 21-19. Dodd/Minello and Akers/McPeak all move on Sunday needing to win one more match to earn their way out of the contender's bracket and into the semi finals.

Youngs, Branagh ready for respect
Elaine Youngs feels a little overlooked. She said she's not being belligerent, mind you, but with the overwhelming star power that the teams of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh and Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers received for their Olympic gold medal triumphs, Youngs feels that she and teammate Nicole Branagh have been disregarded a bit.
That's why, if she had her druthers, she would create her own storybook championship victory here at the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout in Mason.
"It's tough we weren't medallists," Youngs said. "Kerry, Misty, Todd and Phil, they deserve everything that's coming their way, but sometimes you feel like the stepchildren. We're not complaining about it, but we go everywhere, and people say, 'Oh, you play beach volleyball? Are you the American Olympic team?' I say, 'Yes, but we aren't Walsh and May.' And they go, 'Aw.' It's a little disappointing, but we had so much fun. Hopefully we get our chance to get Misty and Kerry for our own gold medal match."

Branagh/Youngs beat unbeatable duo
The AVP Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light Mason saw the world's best Beach Volleyball teams defend their Cincinnati titles on Sunday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. In their first tournament since returning from Beijing, three of USA's Beach Volleyball teams found themselves battling it out for the title in the Mason finals. In front of an AVP Crocs Tour record-high sell-out crowd, Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh unseeded two-time Olympic Gold Medalists May-Treanor/Walsh, beating the top seeds for the title and handing the champions their first loss since August 19, 2007. For the men's Olympic Champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, it was business as usual, beating third seeds Sean Scott and Nick Lucena in the finals, becoming "three-peat" champions, having already won the 2006 and 2007 Cincinnati titles.

Rogers/Dalhausser coast through Mason
Todd Rogers will have to wait a few more days before he can return to the comfort of his own bed in Santa Barbara. But he's OK with it. After all, he and teammate Phil Dalhausser have more beach volleyball to promote.
On Monday, the two will have another big stage as they join approximately 150 Olympic medalists on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in Chicago. When Rogers gets to meet Oprah, he's got one basic question.
"It's a great opportunity to get beach volleyball out there," Rogers. "I know she's going to have a lot of the guests -- all the medalists -- but it'll be a fun time. I'm going to ask her when she's having us over. We're neighbors, after all. Well, maybe, we're not exactly neighbors, but she has a big house in Santa Barbara. I might ask her, 'Hey, I'm thinking about having a gold medal party. Can we have it at your house?'"
