No. 14 UCSB Upsets No. 4 Long Beach State to Place Third at Elephant Bar Invite
Backed by a match-high 18 kills from Jeff Menzel, the No. 14 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team upset No. 4 Long Beach State, 3-0, Saturday to claim third place in its own 45th Annual Elephant Bar Restaurant Collegiate Invitational at Robertson Gymnasium. Cal State Northridge topped Stanford to win the championship.
UCSB (2-1) won by scores of 30-25, 30-19, and 30-26 over Long Beach (1-2). The Gauchos hit .323 while the 49ers swung at a .191 clip for the match. Menzel, a sophomore outside hitter and Santa Barbara native, hit .308 with the 18 kills and just six errors in 39 sets. He also added six digs and two aces and totaled 21.5 points en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Opposite Jake Rosener and middle blocker Scott Slaughter, who was also tabbed all-tourney, each posted 10 kills. Slaughter had no errors in 16 swings (.625) while adding five blocks.
