Default Shelton Steps Down from Volleyball Coaching Post

University of Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage today announced the resignation of head volleyball coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton. Shelton was the winningest coach in Virginia volleyball history.

“It has been great working with Coach Shelton for the past 13 seasons,” Littlepage said. “She leaves UVa as the coach with the most career wins in the program’s history, but she’s made contributions that go beyond the competitive results. She has attracted some outstanding student-athletes to the program in her time as head coach, young women who have been outstanding leaders and role models. She’s also provided a foundation upon which we can build in the future.”

Shelton, who began at UVa in 1995, led the Cavaliers to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program’s first in 1998. She compiled an overall record of 235-179, including a mark of 108-116 in ACC play.

“I want to thank Craig for taking a chance on a young coach 13 years ago,” Shelton said. “It has been an honor to be associated with the University and the athletics department.

“I want to especially thank all my players and assistant coaches. It has been a wonderful ride. Each of you has taught me many things, and for that I am very grateful. My experiences at Virginia will always be a special part of my life.”

Shelton helped produce five All-Americans, including the program’s first two-time winner, Sarah Kirkwood, who completed her eligibility in 2007.

Virginia closed the 2007 campaign with an 18-13 overall mark and finished fourth in the ACC standings at 13-9.
