Bruins Turn Back Cardinals In Outrigger Hotels Opener
HONOLULU - No. 3 UCLA knocked off Ball State in four sets 30-23, 30-27, 26-30, 30-22 this evening in the opening match of the 14th Outrigger Hotels Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Bruins (1-0) jumped out to a huge lead in Game 1 against the Cardinals (0-1) and held off a late run to win 30-23.
In Game 2, Ball State came out stronger out of the gate to lead 20-18, but the Bruins rallied to take six of the next seven points to edge BSU, 30-27.
UCLA held Ball State to a .205 hitting percentage in the match. Individually, the Bruins were led by Garrett Muagututia's match-high 21 kills. Matt Wade and Kevin Ker split the setting duties handing out 28 and 25 assists, respectively.
BSU grabbed an early lead in Game 3 and rode it to a 30-26 win. The Cardinals had their most productive hitting in that game hitting at a .361 clip.
It was all UCLA in Game 4 as the Bruins had their best hitting game posting a .367 average.
The Cardinals were led by Marcus Imwalle who compiled a team-high 17 kills with setter Ethan Pheister dishing out 42 assists.
Tomorrow night, UCLA takes on No. 4 Penn State, while Ball State plays host No. 11 Hawai`i.

Warriors Drop Season Opener In Four To Penn State In Outrigger Hotels Invitational
HONOLULU - The 11th-ranked University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team dropped a four set match 30-21, 24-30, 20-30, 18-30 to No. 4 Penn State in the nightcap on the first day of action in the 14th Outrigger Hotels Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of 2,832 (issued).
The Warriors (0-1) held Penn State to a mere .057 hitting percentage in the opening set while winning it convincingly, 30-21. UH trailed 14-12 then went on a 9-2 run taking command of the set. UH managed a huge front posting 6.0 blocks in the set, four by Matt Rawson.
The Nittany Lions (1-0) evened the match at a game apiece with a 30-24 win in Game 2. PSU was down 12-11 and then outscored UH 9-3 and led by as many as seven (28-21). PSU out hit UH .310 to .206 in the set.
Penn State jumped out to a 10-3 lead in Game 3 and extended to as many as 10 on four occasions, including the final margin of victory, 30-20. PSU hit a whopping .467, while UH hit only .042. The Nittany Lions also improved up front picking up 9.5 block over the course of games two and three.
In Game 4, PSU took the early lead in the set and led 15-10 before UH rallied to pull to within three at 20-17. However, Penn State would reel off the next nine points and finish off the match 30-18.
The Warriors hit .136 collectively on the night. Jim Clar led the way with a team-high 15 kills followed by Jacob Schkud's 10. Setter Sean Carney dished out 38 of UH's 42 assists, while Rawson and Schkud tied for team honors with five blocks each.
Penn State hit .288 with Matt Anderson posting a match-high 21 kills and setter Luke Murray dishing out 56 assists.
Tomorrow night, Penn State battles No. 3 UCLA at 4:00 p.m., while the Warriors host Ball State at 7:00 p.m.

No. 4 Penn State Outlasts No. 3 UCLA At Outrigger Invitational
HONOLULU - Fourth-ranked Penn State pulled off the first mild early season upset knocking off No. 3 UCLA in straight sets 30-19, 30-26, 38-36 on the second day of action in the 14th Outrigger Hotels Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Nittany Lion Matt Anderson's kill broke a five all tie and PSU never looked back in Game 1, pulling away with an 11-point victory, 30-19.
Game 2 began in similar fashion as Ryan Sweitzer pounded down a kill to give PSU a 6-5 lead which they never relinquished. The Lions went up by as many as seven (24-17) before the Bruins made a mini run closing the gap to three, 25-22. The two teams then played side out the rest of the way with PSU taking a 30-26 win.
The third set see-sawed back and forth with 20 ties and 11 lead changes before Penn State outlasted UCLA, 38-36.
PSU was led by Anderson's match-high 24 kills as the Nittany Lions hit a sizzling .387 with 9.0 blocks. Setter Luke Murray kept the offense flowing with 47 assists. UCLA's Garrett Muagututia led the Bruins with 14 kills as the team hit .257 with 5.0 blocks.
Tomorrow night, Penn State battles Ball State at 4:00 p.m., while UCLA faces host Hawai`i at 7:00 p.m.

Stanford Defeats Northridge 3-1 in Season Opener
Stanford Men's Volleyball (1-0) started strong and defeated the third seeded Cal-State Northridge Matadors (0-1) 30-27, 30-25, 28-30, 32-30 in the opening round of the UCSB/Elephant Bar Classic on Friday afternoon on the campus of UCSB. Senior Matt Ceran led the way for the Cardinal with 19 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .333 to lead the squad. Evan Romero collected 14 kills in the season opening match and freshman Spencer McLachlin finished with 13 kills in his season debut.
Freshman Jordan Inafuku played a strong overall game in his collegiate debut as well, coming up with a lot of crucial digs in the match to prevent Northridge from going on big runs. Sophomore Kawika Shoji, an All-MPSF performer last season, led the Cardinal service aces with three and once again played a large role in the season opening victory.
In game one, Stanford started very strong and raced out to a 6-1 lead earlier in the game. The Cardinal extended the lead to 16-7 off of strong serving and block play to take control of the game. Northridge made a run late in the game, but it wasn't enough as Stanford held on to win the game 30-27.

UC Irvine beats UCSB at Elephant Bar Invitational
Santa Barbara, Calif. -- Junior Taylor Wilson pounded a career-high 22 kills to lead the UC Irvine men's volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-21, 30-26, 28-30, 35-33) victory over UC Santa Barbara in the first match of the UCSB/Elephant Bar Tournament at Robertson Gym Friday afternoon.
Wilson recorded a match and career-high 22 kills to go with a career-best seven blocks, three aces and seven digs. Freshman Jordan DuFault had a career-high 14 kills, while freshman Cory Yoder posted a career-best 13 kills. Senior Aaron Harrell hit .769 on 11 kills in 13 attempts and only one error, the 13th best hitting performance by an Anteater all-time. Senior middle blocker Brett Kohout pitched in a career best seven kills and six blocks. Libero Brent Asuka had a match-high 12 digs, while freshman Anthony Spittle recorded a career-high 57 assists, six digs and three blocks.
Jeff Menzel led UCSB with 21 kills, while Sam Moisenco added 12 kills in the loss.
UCI trailed 20-17 in game three, before scoring four straight on consecutive Gaucho hitting errors to take a 21-20 advantage. UCI continued to lead 28-26 before UCSB would score four unanswered (30-38) and force a fourth game.
With game four tied at 33-33, a UCSB hitting error was followed by a kill by Jordan DuFault to win the game, 35-33 and the match 3-1.
Fifth-ranked UCI improves to 2-0 while No. 14 UCSB opens the year 0-1. The defending national champions will take on Stanford at 7:00 p.m. in the Thunderdome. No. 13 Stanford upset No. 7 Cal State Northridge, 3-1 (30-27, 30-25, 28-30, 32-30) in their first match of the day.

Matadors Come Back to Defeat USC in MPSF Opener
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Middles Kevin McKniff and Cody Loe combined for 29 kills and eighth-ranked Cal State Northridge claimed three straight games after dropping the first and defeated No. 11 USC 26-30, 30-28, 30-21, 30-19 Wednesday in the MPSF opener for both teams at the Galen Center.
With the win, the Matadors claim their third straight win and improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. The loss drops the Trojans to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Northridge has now beaten the Trojans 11 straight times (dating back to 2004), including twice already this season.

Waves Win 2008 Opener vs. UCSB, 3-1
MALIBU, Calif. – The second-ranked Pepperdine men’s volleyball team opened the 2008 season strong in defeating 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 30-26, 30-23, 27-30, 30-22, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at Firestone Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

49ers Roll Past Hawai'i
HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- The sixth-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team rolled to a 32-30, 30-20, 30-22 win at the University of Hawai'i on Thursday evening at the Stan Sheriff Center. Long Beach improves to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Hawai'i, which is ranked No. 12 in the country, fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MPSF.

No. 10 OSU Defeats No. 9 IPFW, 3-2
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 10th-ranked Ohio State (1-0 overall, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team rallied with 12 blocks in the final two games to defeat ninth-ranked IPFW (0-1, 0-1), 3-2 (25-30, 30-28, 25-30, 30-21, 15-6) in front of 667 fans in the opening match of the season, played in St. John Arena. OSU’s John Albertson (Sr.-Jr., Ballwin, Mo.) and Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) shared team-high honors with 21 points in the contest. Albertson had 15 kills (.700), two solo blocks and eight assist blocks while Klein had a team-high 20 kills and two assist blocks. C.J. Macias posted a match-high 25.5 points for IPFW with 23 kills, an ace serve, a solo block and an assist block.
