Bruins Cruise by Cardinals in Three Games
Fifth-ranked UCLA handed No. 15 Ball State its eighth loss of the season in a convincing non-conference sweep at Pauley Pavilion Wednesday night.
The Bruins won 30-20, 30-22, 30-11 in 80 minutes before 301 spectators. The victory raised the Bruins' overall record to 13-9. The Cardinals fell to 10-8. The 11 points scored by Ball State in Game 3 tied for the lowest by a UCLA opponent in the rally-scoring era.
Wednesday's match was total domination by the Bruins from the start. Seniors Paul George and Steve Klosterman combined for 32 kills and seven total blocks. Klosterman led both teams with 19 kills (.692) for 20.5 points. George added 13 kills (.524) and five block assists. Sophomore Garrett Muagututia spiked eight kills for 9.5 points, freshman setter Kevin Ker recorded 42 set assists and his brother Tony added 14 digs.
Matt McCarthy and Eric Schultz led Ball State with six kills each. Nationally ranked hitter Nick Meyer was held to just three kills in 28 swings, hitting -.286.
The Bruins and Cardinals return to action on Fri., Mar. 16 at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion before UCLA takes a two-week break for final exams and Spring recess.
