No. 3 Men's Volleyball Downs Ball State, 3-1


MUNCIE, Ind. - The third-ranked Penn State men's volleyball team defeated Ball State in four games (30-23, 28-30, 30-27, 34-32) Friday night in Muncie, Ind. The Nittany Lions improve to 5-0 for the year while the Cardinals fall to 1-5.

Junior outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) provided a match-high and season-high 25 kills as one of four Penn State players with double-digit kills. Junior middle hitter Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a season-best 15 kills on .500 hitting while junior opposite Ryan Sweitzer (Lancaster, Pa.) fell one kill shy of his career best mark with 14 as sophomore middle hitter Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) provided 10 kills on .438 hitting. As a team, Penn State attacked at a .295 clip.

Default No. 6 Stanford Takes Down No. 11 USC in Four

No. 6 Stanford came out strong early, and never looked back in their win over No. 11 USC (30-28, 30-26, 26-30, 30-17) Friday night at Maples Pavilion. Sophomore Evan Romero led the way once again with 19 kills and senior Matt Ceran was right behind with a double-double, finishing with 18 kills and 12 digs.

The Cardinal came out firing in game one as Romero recorded seven kills in the first frame, to go along with four digs. The sophomore opposite hitter tallied a .385 hitting percentage in the game and chipped in a service ace as well, late in the game, to help seal the win. Senior Jesse Meredith recorded three kills in the opening game and hit .286, and was all over the court the entire match.

Default Long Beach Beats UCLA

LOS ANGELES -- Paul Lotman had 25 kills and the Long Beach State defense limited UCLA to a .212 hitting percentage as the 49ers defeated the Bruins 30-27, 30-18, 24-30, 30-28 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) men's volleyball match on Friday evening at Pauley Pavilion. The fifth-ranked 49ers improve to 6-0 overall this season, but more importantly, 4-0 in the MPSF. The fourth-ranked Bruins fell to 5-2 and 3-1 in league play.

Default Tritons Upset the Defending National Champions, Defeat UC Irvine 3-1

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s volleyball team upset the defending national champion and 7th-ranked UC Irvine Anteaters by a 30-25, 30-22, 31-33, 34-32 score on Saturday night in Irvine. The win marked the Tritons first win over the Anteaters since the 2004 campaign. After squandering a late lead in game three, it was the Tritons coming back from a 25-21 deficit in game four to tie the game at 26-26. UCSD would have three chances at game point while the Anteaters had one of their own. After a Gerald Houseman ace, Russ Hardy sent down the match-ending kill. Hardy had a huge night for the Tritons with a career-best 24 kills on .643 hitting. Frank Fritsch added 14 kills and seven digs.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The third-ranked Penn State men's volleyball team swept No. 9 Ohio State Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio, 30-22, 37-35, 30-24. The Nittany Lions improve to 6-0 while the Buckeyes even their record to 1-1. The win is the first Penn State sweep in St. John Arena since March 26, 1995.

Junior opposite Ryan Sweitzer (Lancaster, Pa.) led all players with a career-high 19 kills on .424 hitting while junior outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) recorded 18 kills and middle hitters Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) each recorded seven kills, with Lipsitz' coming on 11 errorless swings to hit .636. As a team, Penn State outhit Ohio State .379 to .260.

Default Vance's Career-High 26 Kills Leads Matadors Past #14 UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Eric Vance pounded a career-high 26 kills as eighth-ranked Cal State Northridge dropped the first game but came back to win the final three (31-33, 30-28, 30-24, 30-24) over #14 UC Santa Barbara Saturday at Robertson Gym.

With the win, the Matadors improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF. The loss drops the Gauchos to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
