Default No. 13 Hawai`i Outlasts No. 15 UC San Diego In Five Sets

HONOLULU - The 13th ranked University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team (3-4, 2-2 MPSF) finished off the No. 15 UC San Diego (2-5, 1-5) tonight 30-25, 30-24, 28-30, 27-30, 15-7 in front a crowd of 2,652 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Outside hitter Joshua Walker had 24 kills, a career best for the redshirt freshman. Walker made his second-consecutive start tonight. He also had four service aces and hit .413.
Outside hitter Jacob Schkud had 19 kills and seven digs. Setter Nejc Zemljak had 61 assists and six digs to pace the Warriors. Opposite Sean Carney was third on the team in kills with 11, adding a team-high 14 digs.

UH is now 39-0 all-time against UCSD. It is only the third time that UCSD and UH have gone to five sets.

UCSD came out strong against the Warriors early in game one. The Tritons led by as many as five, at 19-14 over Hawai`i. An attack error by Triton's Frank Fitsch gave UH their first lead of the game at 25-24. The Warriors took advantage of two more attack errors by UCSD and pulled out the win, 30-25.

Hawai`i took command of game two against the Tritons early. Two straight service aces by Walker gave UH a 20-13 lead, their largest of the game. The Warriors were aided by six Triton service errors and nine attack errors in their route of UCSD in game two, 30-24. The Tritons only hit .154 in game two.

Both teams fought back and forth throughout game three. The Tritons led most of the way, and at the midway point led 15-13. UH found itself back into the game when Carney and Walker got back-to-back kills to tie the game at 20. The Tritons closed out the game after a Russ Hardy kill gave them a two point advantage, 29-27. UH would not recover and UCSD took game three, 30-28.

In game four, UH and UCSD were locked during the contest. The Warriors held a slight advantage early on at 10-9 off a kill by Schkud. An attack error by Carney and a kill by Fritsch gave UCSD a slight 19-17 edge. The Warriors could not get back into the match and UCSD won their second straight game, 30-27, to force game five.

The Warriors started off strong in game five. UH jumped out to a 8-1 lead against UCSD. Steven Grgas and Walker chipped in two kills apiece to slow down the Tritons. UCSD could not revive their efforts after their slow start. The Warrior frontline stymied the Tritons, sparked by James Clar, who came off the bench and tallied five blocks in game five alone, pushing the Warriors to the 15-7 win.

The Warriors will next travel to the mainland to face off against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 1 and 2.

Default Streak Ends -- Bruins Outlast Waves in Five Games

Fortunate circumstances have a way of circling back to the unfortunate. After enduring its share of bad fortune, the UCLA men's volleyball team was more than willing Friday night to accept some from an opponent.

Fifth-ranked UCLA happily took No.2 Pepperdine's only service error of Game 5 at match point to stop several streaks of futility, and hand the Waves their second straight loss at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Bruins defeated the Waves 21-30, 30-20, 27-30, 30-28, 15-12 in two hours and six minutes in front of 1,357 in Malibu. UCLA improved to 6-3 overall, 4-2 in league play. Pepperdine fell to 4-2 overall and in conference play. The victory snapped UCLA's two-match skid and ended a four-match losing streak to the Waves. The win also was the Bruins' first at Pepperdine since the 2004 season.
