Bruins Outlast Lancers in Five at Pauley 1/30


The fourth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team outlasted NAIA powerhouse Cal Baptist in five games Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins won 30-27, 28-30, 18-30, 30-21, 15-12 in two hours and 15 minutes in front of 354 fans. The victory raised UCLA's overall record to 7-3. Cal Baptist fell to 2-4.

The Bruins won without sophomore outside hitter Garrett Muagututia, who was ill with the flu. To pick up the slack for their leading hitter and scorer, third-year sophomore Brett Perrine stepped up and led the Bruins with 14 kills, including four in the final game. Junior Jamie Diefenbach added 13 kills (.545), two aces and seven total blocks to lead the Bruins with 19 points. Junior Ryan Ratelle was the third Bruin in double-digits with 11 kills and junior Sean O'Malley added nine kills (.421) off the bench.

Cal Baptist's Adiel Tiedjop led all players with 28 kills (.684), four total blocks and 30.5 points. Yukai Sun added 24 kills, two block assists and 25 points.

The Bruins return to MPSF action on Fri., Feb. 1 against ninth ranked UC Irvine at 7 p.m.

Default Long Beach Downs Waves In Three 1/30

LONG BEACH – Senior Paul Lotman pounded down 16 kills and Dan Alexander added 11 kills and 10 block assists to lead the third-ranked Long Beach State men’s volleyball team to a resounding 30-21, 32-30, 30-21 win over fifth-ranked Pepperdine on Wednesday evening at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers stay unbeaten at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Pepperdine fell to 4-3 overall and 4-3 in MPSF play.

Default Tigers Earn First Victory of the Season in Three Games Over No. 7 Stanford 1/31

Stanford, Calif.- The Pacific men's volleyball team got their first taste of victory this season as they swept No. 7 Stanford on Thursday Jan. 31. The victory moves the Tigers to 1-8 overall and 1-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) conference. Stanford falls to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in MPSF play. Scores of the match were: 30-21, 30-26, 30-24.

Default Men’s Volleyball Scores 3-1 Win At Pacific 2/1

STOCKTON, Calif. - - The Ball State men’s volleyball team opened its trip to the Golden State with a 3-1 (30-23, 30-26, 28-30, 30-25) victory over Pacific Friday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

With the win, the Cardinals fourth-straight, BSU improves to 5-5 on the year. The Tigers, who picked up their first win of the season Thursday night versus No. 7 Stanford, drops to 1-9 with the loss.

Default UCSB Takes Down No. 13 Hawai'i in Five Games

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Theo Brunner had a match-high 21 kills and libero Andy McGuire posted a career-high 20 digs as the UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team outlasted No. 13 Hawai'i to pick up a 3-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) victory Friday at Robertson Gymnasium. Scores of the two-and-a-half hour match were 29-31, 30-26, 25-30, 30-21, and 15-13.

With its second consecutive win, the Gauchos improved to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the MPSF, while the Warriors dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Neither team hit well with UCSB finishing at .195 (74-37-190) and Hawai'i at .157 (61-32-185). However, the Gauchos poured it on late, hitting .421 (22-6-38) in game four and .368 (9-2-19) in the deciding frame. The highest the Warriors hit was .220 (14-5-41) in the third game.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The eighth-ranked Ohio State (5-1 overall, 4-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team defeated Lewis (3-4, 0-2), 3-0 (32-30, 30-25, 30-27) Friday evening in St. John Arena behind a career-high 24.5 points from Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio). Versen tied his career-high of 20 kills in the match, adding three ace serve, a solo block and an assist block. Flyer Jared Dayton had a team-high 12.5 points for Lewis with nine kills, an ace serve, a solo block and three assist blocks.

Default Waves Rebound With Sweep of UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The fifth-ranked Pepperdine men’s volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 30-28, 30-26, 30-23 sweep at #15 UC San Diego on Friday night in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.



Pepperdine improved to 5-3 overall and 5-3 in the MPSF and improved to a perfect 33-0 all-time against UC San Diego (3-6, 1-6).



Senior setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS), the reigning national player of the year, had 37 assists and seven digs and led the Waves to a .360 hitting percentage.

Default Bruins Beat Anteaters for Third Straight Victory

Fourth-ranked UCLA stifled surging No. 9 UC Irvine Friday night in a key MPSF match at UCLA. The Bruins snapped the Anteaters' three-match winning streak and extended their own streak to three matches.

UCLA won 23-30, 30-25, 30-26, 31-29 in two hours and five minutes before 1,123 fans in Pauley Pavilion. The attendance was a season-high at home. The victory raised the Bruins' overall record to 8-3, 5-2 in conference play. The Anteaters fell to 6-6, 3-4.

LONG BEACH – The third-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team remained perfect in 2008 as they dispatched of 11th-ranked USC 30-25, 32-30, 30-23 on Friday evening in front of a season-high crowd of 1,248 at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers improved to 8-0 overall and remain in first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) with a 6-0 mark. USC fell to 4-6 and 3-4 in league action.
