Irvine, Calif. - Junior Jon Steller recorded 16 kills to lead No. 7 UC Irvine to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-28) victory over No. 14 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters had a balanced attack with Cole Reinholm (9), Aaron Harrell (8), Cory Yoder (7) and Kevin Wynne (7) each contributing in the kill column. Setter Ryan Ammerman totaled 41 set assists, three service aces, eight digs and three block assists in the win. Libero Brent Asuka had a match-high 13 digs.
The Gauchos dominated the net, out-blocking UCI 16.5 to 7.5. Jeff Menzel led UCSB with 11 kills and eight blocks. Phil Mathews, Theo Brunner and Michael Fisher each put away seven kills. Mathews had a team-high nine digs, while Brunner matched Menzel with eight blocks.
