No. 2 Matadors Hold Off No. 13 Hawai'i's Upset Bid to Win in Five Games


NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior Eric Vance put down a career-high 40 kills as second-ranked Cal State Northridge held off the upset bid of No. 13 Hawai'i to win in five games (30-28, 41-43, 26-30, 30-22, 15-13) in an MPSF match on Tuesday at The Matadome.

With the win, the Matadors claim their 12th-consecutive win and improve to 18-4 overall and 14-3 in the MPSF. The loss drops the Warriors to 10-12 overall and 7-10 in conference play.

Default Second-Ranked Matadors Roll Past No. 13 Hawai'i 30-21, 30-25, 30-28

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After being pushed to the limit by Hawai'i one night earlier, second-ranked Cal State Northridge rolled past the 13th-ranked Warriors on Wednesday 30-21, 30-25, 30-28 in an MPSF match at The Matadome.

With the win, the Matadors (19-4, 15-3) continue to build on their school-record win streak which is currently at 13. Hawai'i drops to 10-13 overall and 7-11 in the MPSF. By sweeping the two-match series, Northridge claims just its second home sweep over Hawai'i in the 29-year series.

Junior Eric Vance, who pounded a career-high 40 kills in the marathon five-set win on Tuesday, led the Matador offense with 15 kills while hitting .333. Vance also added three aces to his team-leading total of 39. McKniff added 12 kills while committing just a pair of hitting errors in 18 swings for a solid .556 hitting clip. McKniff also had the Matadors' lone block in the match. Mike Gaudino (.615) and Isaac Kneubuhl (.250) each tallied nine kills while Gaudino added a match-high 16 kills narrowly missing a double-double.

Hawai'i was led by Brennon Dyer's 12 kills (.250) while Joshua Walker came off the bench to record 11 kills (.300). Setter Sean Carney contributed 25 assists and six digs and Jacob Schkud added seven kills, two aces and three blocks.

Default No. 9 UC Irvine Rallies To Upset No. 3 Long Beach State, 3-2

Irvine, Calif. - No. 9 UC Irvine rallied from a two game deficit to upset No. 3 Long Beach State, 3-2 (22-30, 22-30, 30-26, 30-27, 15-12) at the Bren Events Center Thursday.



The Anteaters win their first five-gamer (1-4) of the year and improve to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in the MPSF. Long Beach State goes to 19-4 and 14-3 in league play. Three of Long Beach's four losses this year have come in five games.

Default UCSD Upsets No. 8 UCLA; Defeats Bruins for first time in School History

LA JOLLA, Calif. – For the first time in school history, the UC San Diego men’s volleyball team defeated No. 8 UCLA 26-30, 30-25, 32-30, 31-33, 15-9 on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. The win was UCSD’s first over the Bruins in 34 meetings. Jason Spangler slammed down a career-best 30 kills and Eric Leserman became UCSD’s career-leader in digs with a match-high 19. After dropping a heartbreaking game four, UCSD was on fire in the fifth game, led by Gerald Houseman’s five kills. The Tritons hit at a .556 clip and held the Bruins to just .000 in the final game. With the win, UCSD improves to 8-15, 4-13 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Bruins drop to 14-11, 9-8 MPSF.

Default USC Men's Volleyball Sweeps Pacific

Murphy Troy had 18 kills and Juan Figueroa added 17 kills to lead the No. 12-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-16, 31-29 win over Pacific in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (March 28) at USC's Galen Center.

USC improved to 11-13 overall and 8-10 in the MPSF, while Pacific fell to 4-19 and 1-16.

Default Perez, Seniors Lead to Five-Set Win

PROVO, Utah (Mar. 28, 2008) -- Senior Ivan Perez earned his eighth double-double of the season and second in a row in a five-set win (25-30, 30-25, 29-31, 30-24, 15-11) as the No. 4 BYU men's volleyball team hosted No. 14 UC Santa Barbara Friday at the Smith Fieldhouse.

Perez led all hitters with 27 kills and 12 digs hitting .444 on the night. Jonathan Charette, Trent Sorensen, and Russell Holmes also had 16, 15, and 14 kills, respectively, as well. As a team the Cougars got off to a slow start, but finished with 12.0 total team blocks and a .330 attack percentage.

"We knew UCSB would be legit," BYU head coach Shawn Patchell said. "They beat up on USC, and we saw the tape. You can't take anyone lightly ever in the [Mountain Pacific Sports Federation]."

FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior opposite hitter Kyle Gramit's double-double helped lead the 11th-ranked George Mason men's volleyball team to its sixth consecutive victory with a 3-2 (21-30, 30-27, 30-24, 27-30, 15-10) win over Loyola (Ill.) on Friday evening at the Fieldhouse. Gramit posted 21 kills on 41 swings along with a career-high 18 digs as the Patriots improved to 15-6 overall and 10-1 in home matches this season.
