Default Lotman Leads 49ers To Sweep Over UCSB

The fourth-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team received a strong offensive performance up and down the line-up in a 30-18, 30-25, 30-24 win over 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Friday evening. Paul Lotman led the 49ers with 19 kills and a career-high six service aces. The Beach improves to 22-5 overall and remains tied for first place in the MPSF at 17-4. UCSB falls to 9-17 and 6-15 in league action.

Default No. 11 Stanford Rallies For 3-1 Win Over No. 6 UCLA

Stanford men's volleyball knew coming in that every game matters at this point in the season. With five teams in the MPSF separated by just one game, a loss or a win provides a big swing in the standings. The Cardinal dropped the first game Friday, but rallied to win the next three games (24-30, 30-27, 30-20, 30-28) in a big victory over UCLA. The win put them in a dead heat with the Bruins with only one match to go. Both teams have an 11-10 record in MPSF conference play.

Default UC Irvine Sweeps Pacific

UC Irvine topped Pacific, 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-22) at the Spanos Center Friday.

The Anteaters improve to 15-13 overall and 11-10 in conference play, while the Tigers fall to 4-24 on the season and 1-21 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

UC Irvine had a balanced attack with Jon Steller and Cory Yoder leading the team with 16 kills each. Jordan DuFault added 12 kills while middle blockers Aaron Harrell and Kevin Wynne recorded six and four kills, respectively. On the outside, DuFault hit .478 and Yoder was .448 on the attack. Libero Brent Asuka and Steller led the Anteaters with eight digs each.

Default Long Beach Wins MPSF Regular Season Title

Fourth-ranked Long Beach State made a statement as they won the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular season title with a convincing 32-30, 30-27, 30-26 victory at Cal State Northridge on Saturday evening. Sophomore Dean Bittner led the 49ers with 22 kills as Long Beach ended its regular season at 23-5 overall and 18-4 in the MPSF. Northridge fell to 22-6 and 17-5 in league play and finished in third place. The 49ers tied BYU for first in the league standings at 18-4, but the 49ers receive the number one seed thanks to sweeping the Cougars on March 20-21.

Default Cougars Sweep, Clinch No. 2 Seed

The No. 2 BYU men's volleyball team (23-4, 18-4) clinched a share of the regular-season Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title with a three-set sweep over No. 10 USC (13-15, 10-12) Saturday in the Smith Fieldhouse.

BYU will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MPSF tournament because Long Beach State holds the tiebreaker over the Cougars. That means that BYU will host a quarterfinal match next Saturday against the winner of a play-in match between the Nos. 7 and 8 seeds to be held Wednesday.

Aided by 16.5 team blocks, the top-ranked Penn State men's volleyball team swept IPFW in three games (30-20, 30-27, 32-30) Saturday night in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Nittany Lions close out the regular season with a 26-1 record, equaling the 1997 Penn State squad who also recorded a 26-1 mark heading into the EIVA Championship.
