CPCI senior to play volleyball at Concordia University
CPCI senior Kristen Strom will be taking her volleyball career to Concordia University, a division III school in Chicago beginning this fall.
Strom first heard of the school through her father, who is a Lutheran pastor.
"I picked the college because it's Lutheran and has a good atmosphere," Strom said.
Strom's coach at CPCI, Josh Landon, said she made huge strides from her junior to senior year.
"She had a very successful summer at University of Illinois' summer camp and had a very big impact on our team," Landon said.
Landon said that Strom, who stands 5 feet 11 inches, has about a six foot three inch wingspan, which combined with her vision at the net allows her to make the plays she does. Landon also joked that Strom's success at the net is in spite of the fact she is not a great leaper.
"I think we might be able to get the Crescent City phonebook under her shoes," Landon said. "But her ability to hang in the air and read the defense is one of her best assets."
Landon said Strom was a great team leader who always tried to keep the team spirit high and that she was able to take criticism from Landon, which some people wouldn't be able to take.
"She has a great personality and she made it very easy for me to be her coach," Landon said.
Strom's first team experience came in fifth grade but said she had been bumping since third grade. Strom got started on volleyball when she and Heidi McKean were team managers for her sister's team.
