Default Host St. Lucia is favourite to win Women’s Norceca B

Host St. Lucia is rated as heavy favorite in the FIVB Women’s World Championship First Round Norceca B to be held on March 27-29 at the Beausejour Indoor Facility in the capital of the country.

Currently ranked 21 in Norceca, the local team will be playing against representatives from Antigua & Barbuda (27), St. Vicent and the Grenadines (29) and Grenada.

“I think that St. Lucia must be considered as the team to beat here,” said Glenn Quinlan, President of the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) one of the sub-zones of the Norceca Confederation. “Antigua has also a competitive side but the host team should have the home court advantage.”

Only the winner of the competition will move up to the second round tournament Norceca D to be played in Barbados on May 24-31 with the participation, besides the home team, of squads representing Jamaica, Haiti, Bahamas and Cayman Islands.

Meanwhile, Brian Louisy, President of St. Lucia Volleyball Association, sounded very optimistic about his team’s chances while admitting that several teams of the region are talented and progressing.

Louisy informed that the Opening Ceremony of the tournament will start at 17:00 next Friday followed by the matches Antigua & Barbuda vs. St Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia vs. Grenada.

Default Coach of St. Lucia optimistic about his team’s chances

ust hours before the first whistle in the FIVB Women’s World Championship First Round Norceca B, the coach of host St. Lucia expressed his optimism about the chances of his squad in the four-team competition.

Florian Combie stated that his main goal is to test his players against the stronger competition they would face in the next round of the world event.

The coaches of the four teams talked about their expectations prior the general technical meeting held at the Palm Haven Hotel in the capital of St. Lucia.

Here is what the coaches said:

Florian Combie (St. Lucia): “We hope to be victorious, because we are looking forward to advance to the second round and face the challenge of meeting those countries. We have been training regularly and the addition of the Cuban coach Roberto Garcia provides a more scientific approach to our program.”

Harris Lewis (Antigua & Barbuda): “It is exciting to take part in a tournament of this magnitude. It feels like you are part of something big and our team is excited about going out and playing our first game. We have been preparing for the event. It was not 100 per cent but good enough.”

Nicole Ross (St.Vincent and Grenadines): “We look forward to have a good tournament. There are many challenges and we are excited about this type of competition at this level. So we hope to do our best.”

Default Antigua & Barbuda blanked St. Vincent & Grenadines

Antigua & Barbuda beat St. Vincent & Grenadines in straight sets in the first match of the FIVB Women’s World Championship first round Norceca B tournament.

Since the start of the match the superiority of the winners was evident and they went on to grab the win by score of 25-12, 25-15, 25-7. The girls from Antigua & Barbuda outscored their opponents 11-2 in the serve category.

Jenel Lafong was the best scorer for the winners with 9 points, Teera Charles and Sharon Payne each had 7 tallies and Carolyn Christian and Shauna Isaac contributed 6 apiece.

“We played more like a team,” said Isaac, the captain of Antigua & Barbuda. “But I expect to play better in the next two days.”

“We played basic volleyball and I gave the chance to play to most of my players,” said Harris Lewis, the winning coach.

“We didn’t have the fighting spirit and we had lack of communication,” said Brenda Pinder-Joseph, of St. Vincent.

“They seemed a little bit intimidated and never got the rhythm,” said coach Nicole Ross.

Default St. Lucia impresses in first victory

Three players scored in double figures and host St Lucia enjoyed a jump start in the FIVB Women’s World Championship first round Norceca B by obtaining a clear triumph over Grenada in straight sets Friday night.

The local team, favourite to win the competition, showed good coordination in its game and much better physical condition than the rival team while winning by score of 25-15, 25-14, 25-9.

“I am very impressed with the game level of St. Lucia,” said Raphael Brathwaite, the coach of Grenada. “They look better than the other teams.”
