The FIVB is in mourning after the death of Michalis Mastrandreas, former FIVB Vice President and President of the European Volleyball Confederation, who passed away on Friday, February 27, in Athens aged 84.

The Greek Mr. Mastrandreas, born May 23, 1925, in Egypt, was a prominent businessman in Libya before returning to Greece in 1970. He was Hellenic Volleyball Federation President until 1972 and in 1975 was elected President of the same Federation.

During his presidency, Volleyball became one of the most popular sports in the country and the national teams of Greece enjoyed much success on the international stage.

Mastrandreas served from 1976 to 1995 as a CEV Executive Committee member, Treasurer and, finally, as President of the Confederation, at the same time being FIVB Vice President and member of the Greek Olympic Committee.

He headed the Greek delegation at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984. In 1993 he handed over the presidency of the Hellenic Volleyball Federation to Mr. Thanassis Beligratis and in 2004 he was named Honorary President of the CEV as well as of the Greek Federation.

Mastrandreas frequently attended Volleyball matches in Athens and spent time in his beloved island of Kassos in his final days. His funeral will be held Tuesday, March 3, in Athens.
