The oficial opening ceremony of the Gatorade Beach Volleyball of Guatemala, the second stop of the 2009 Norceca Circuit, took place on Wednesday with the presence of Alvaro Arzu, the Mayor of Guatemala City.

Men’s top-seed Hans Stolfus and Anthony Medel, of USA, cruised past the preliminary round of the Gatorade’s Guatemala Beach Volleyball Tournament winning their two matches with identical score.

Americans Hans Stolfus and Anthony Medel and Puerto Ricans Roberto Rodriguez and Orlando Irizarry advanced to the semi finals of the Gatorade’s Guatemala Beach Volleyball Tournament on the men’s side with perfect records.



Stolfus-Medel won their morning match over Luis Morales-Rafael Vargas of ESA-2 by score of 21-14, 21-11 and defeated Dominicans Yewddys Perez-German Recio 21-12, 21-14. Rodriguez-Irizarry of PUR-1 won 21-15, 21-19 against Jorge Bolaños-Erick Garrido of GUA-1 and then battled hard to down Abdel Otero-Joseph Gil of PUR-2 by score of 21-12, 22-24, 15-10.

Cubans Nirian Sinal and Kirenia Ballar and Americans Beth Van Fleet and Saralyn Smith qualified as the top two semi finalists of the Gatorade’s Guatemala Beach Volleyball Tournament, the second leg of 2009 Norceca Circuit.



Both pairs won their two matches on Saturday while two others made the final four’s round via the losers’ bracket under the double-elimination system. Sinal-Ballar won 21-10, 21-10 over Blanca Resino-Susana Alvarado of GUA-2 and then beat Costa Ricans Ingrid Morales-Natalia Alfaro 21-11, 21-11.

Americans Hans Stolfus and Anthony Medel avenged the loss of their countrywomen to the Cubans by edging the Cuban pair of Sergio Gonzalez and Karell Peña in the men’s final of the Gatorade Guatemala Beach Volleyball Tournament. The score was 21-18, 16-21, 15-8.
