FIVB Women's Junior Volleyball World Championship runners-up set to play in Peru
FIVB Women’s Junior Volleyball World Championship runners-up, the Dominican Republic, will join Puerto Rico, Chile and Peru in the first Women’s International Summer Tournament in Lima, Peru which begins on Thursday.
The tournament, which runs until February 27, will see each of the four teams play each other once to determine an overall winner.
The Dominican team includes libero Brenda Castillo, who picked up the MVP award from last year’s Women’s Junior World Championships, and middle-blocker Candida Arias who was also part of the same squad that picked up silver at the event in Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico
Meanwhile, hosts Peru will be represented by a squad consisting of players under 23-years old in preparation for the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Japan from 29 October to 14 November as well as for the South American Games due to be held in Medellin, Colombia, from March 19 to 30 this year.
The Peruvian National Federation, presided by Juan Castro, announced the match-schedule on Wednesday, which features a set of mouth watering opening fixtures between NORCECA sides Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic followed by CSV sides Peru and Chile.
“This is our team for the future,” said Mr. Castro on the young home team. “Our hopes of qualification for the London 2012 Olympic Games rely on this group of young players.”
