Default Alaemo talking to group at Bendigo

Daren Grimsey has commenced as the NOSP scholarship coach for 2008/09. Congratulations! Initial reports suggest his refereeing will be an asset to the refereeing cadre here in Australia for the foreseeable future.

All those interested in applying for a refereeing scholarship in 2009, are urged to speak with Darren (he will be at most Crocs tour events this year) to get sense of how the program will help in his professional development as referee. You are also welcome to discuss this opportunity with the Sport Development Manager; sdm@avf.org.au

Once again the Sport Development section of the AVF thanks the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) for their generous support for this officiating scholarship.

On the AVF website is a short article on “How to be a Great Referee” by Corny Galdones, go to Referees resources and uniforms and go to referee development articles.

Rule books! This issue is being resolved. After a lengthy delay with the supplier these will be available for shipment to State Associations shortly. As this report is being written the Coaching Level 2 draft is going through final proofing and editing, to ready it for submission to the Australian Sports Commission.

Default AIS/AVF Beach Volleyball, National Centre of Excellence

Our Top Ranked Australian teams of Nat Cook / Tamsin Barnett and Josh Slack / Andrew Schacht continue to focus on training and preparing towards the Beijing Olympic Games in August. Cook / Barnett are currently ranked 9th in official FIVB Olympic rankings and Schacht/Slack are 10th. Both teams are striving for Top 6 rankings for seeding purposes for the Olympic drawing of lots in July.

The Adelaide Australian Open World Tour event is approaching rapidly (March 24 - 30) and all are very keen to play well in front of family, friends and the Australian Volleyball Community on the Sands of Glenelg in late March. The excitement of an FIVB World Tour event in Australia during the 2008 Olympic Season has the athletes pumped for the season ahead.

Our staff have been working very hard over the past 6 weeks securing quality International Olympic ranked teams to train at the AIS/AVF National Centre of Excellence during March. We have been able to secure 9 Men's teams and 10 Women's teams to train with our AIS/AVF program athletes in the lead up to the Australian World Tour event.

The Crocs Australian Tour is in full swing and our athletes will be travelling to Port Macquarie, Surfers Paradise, Scarborough and conclude the domestic season with the National Championships at Glenelg over the Easter Holiday period.

In the Crocs Australian Tour event 1 at Surfers Paradise, Heike Jensen AIS/SASI (playing with Tamsin Barnett), Chris McHugh AIS/SASI (playing with Josh Slack) and Trent Irwin AIS/QAS (playing with Marty Suan) all gained their best ever finishes on the Australian Domestic Tour. This fact shows the hard work from these athletes is starting to pay off in results during tournament play.

Nat Cook and Tamsin Barnett are on track to set the Crocs Australian Tour alight in Surfers Paradise in a few weeks. The team has been training very well and our keen to show the Australian public and fellow Australian players their improvement on the sands of the Gold Coast Feb 15 - 17

A few early season injuries have hit the program in recent months. Coaching Staff have been working with the Medical team and the injured athletes in setting up rehabilitation plans which have been running smoothly.

A successful Men's Talent Camp was conducted during January in Adelaide and Brisbane by Men's Senior Coach Craig Marshall and assistant Marty Suan. Over 30 athletes from around the country participated in the camps.

A successful National Talent Identification Camp for girls was conducted at Bond University (Gold Coast) in January with over 20 athletes attending the Beach Camp with Women's Senior Coach Carlos 'Alemao' Galletti, AIS Scholarship Coach Michael Nelson running the sessions and Jenny Becker (AVF Women's Technical Director) managing the logistics.

Expressions of Interest for the 2008 Beach Volleyball World Championships U/19 and U/21 have been circulating the Volleyball Community since the National Junior Championships in Queensland late last month. These forms can be found on the AVF Website for Junior male and female athletes who are keen to express an interest to attend April's Camp. Successful selected athletes' will be invited during March to the April camp.

Default Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships 2008

AJBVC is over for another year with South Australia taking home the Andy Burdin Champion State Shield. This year we had a record 132 teams compete, including teams from New Zealand and Vanuatu.
With some crazy weather on the Gold Coast we were forced to move AJBVC to beautiful Coolangatta Beach instead of Broadbeach. Coolangatta beach was the only beach on the gold coast that could accommodate the 17 courts needed for this event. The sun was shining and we have almost had a rain free event but did see a king tide on Tuesday morning which swallowed up 6 courts

The standard of volleyball in all divisions was high with lots of great talent out there on the sand. Finals day proved to be very exciting, with not only the Andy Burdin Shield up for grabs but also Trans-Tasman bragging rights. We saw Aussie/Kiwi show downs in 4 of the 6 grand finals. The Aussies showed strong fighting spirit conceding one gold medal to the Kiwis.

Congratulations to Champion State SA who won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Runners up for the Andy Burdin Champion State Shield was NSW who certainly dominated the senior women’s divisions.

We send our congratulations to not only the medal winners but to all athletes for their hard work and the spirit with which they played. Thank you to the coaches, managers and State Associations who put in long hours to prepare athletes and support them during the event. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Thanks to the hardy crew of officials and volunteers from Volleyball Australia, Volleyball Queensland and the Queensland community that bent their backs to ensure a successful tournament was held in trying conditions.
