Mayor of Guatemala officially inaugurated the 2008 NORCECA’s second leg
The second leg of the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit was inaugurated last night with the official opening pronounced by Mr. Alvaro Arzu, Mayor of Guatemala City.
The ceremony was attended by participating athletes, delegates from NORCECA, the Executive Committee of the Guatemalan National Volleyball Federation led by its president Mr. Luis Enrique Santis, Directors of the National Confederation and representatives of the Municipality.
Mr. Arzu, a former President of Guatemala and currently serving his second term as Mayor of the Capital, declared as guests of honour all the participants in the competition and pointed out the importance of organizing this type of events that elevate the name of our country.
Mr. Nelson Ramirez, Director of the Competition, explained the importance of the NORCECA Circuit as it is the start of the qualification process towards the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico 2010 and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico in 2011.
Earlier on Wednesday, the National Federation held a press conference to announce the tournament with a huge presence of the national media. Mr. Santis invited the journalists to cover the competition which runs throughout the weekend.
It was also announced the media workshop to be conducted by Dr. Roosevelt Comarazamy on Thursday at 10 a.m. in one of the meeting rooms of Hotel El Conquistador.

A record of 16 countries represented in Guatemala
A record of 16 countries are represented in the second stop of the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit which start today at Campo de Marte facilities. Seventeen tandems in the men’s division and sixteen in the women’s side have been registered.
The participating countries are: Aruba, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, United States, St Kitts & Nevis, Trinidad & Tobago and St. Vincent & Grenadines.
“We are very proud with presence here of so many players from those countries,” said Nelson Ramirez, the Director of the Event. “The growth of this competition in just its second year is amazing and I can see better things happening in the future.”
The General Technical Meeting was held last night at Las Pergolas Ballroom in Hotel El Conquistador. It was attended by Luis Enrique Santis, President of the National Federation of Guatemala and Mrs. Marta Centeno de SAJCHÉ, General Secretary of NORCECA.
The matches for the preliminary round are as follows:
Men: ESA vs. ARU; TTO vs. GUA (1); CRC (1) vs. HON; NIC vs. CUB; JAM vs. CRC (2); VIN vs. DOM; SKN vs. MEX; GUA (2) vs. PUR and USA vs. ESA or ARU.
Women: CUB vs. ESA; USA vs. MEX (1); GUA (1) vs. NIC; TTO vs. CAN; PUR vs. GUA (3); MEX (2) vs. VIN; ESA (2) vs. SKN and CRC vs. GUA (2).

Kindelán-Munder enjoy good start
Cubans Yoendri Kindelan-Leonel Munder started the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit with the right foot by scoring a 21-8, 21-15 victory over the Nicaraguans Winston Calderon-Francisco Castro on Friday.
Puerto Ricans Orlando Irrizarry-Roberto Rodriguez, runner-ups in the opening leg in Boca Chica, took a 21-19, 21-11 triumph over Guatemala (2) of Jaime Ozuna-Ivan Pineda. The duo of Guatemala (1) of Jorge Bolanos-Erick Garrido crushed Trinidadians Colin Charles-Jason Dennis 21-7, 21-5.
Meanwhile other matches of the men’s bracket, the USA couple of Dan Madden-Kevin Gregan prevailed 21-17, 21-17 over Jeovanni Medrano-Rafael Vargas of El Salvador, and Mexicans Juan Virgen-Aldo Miramontes won by 21-5, 21-12 over Steadroy Collins-Kemoroy Percival.
The teams of Jamaica and St. Vincent & Grenadines lost their matches against Costa Rica (2) and Dominican Republic respectively, by not showing up, due to travelling difficulties.

Canet-Sinal won two in tie-breakers
The Cuban duo of Ion Canet-Nirian Sinal twice had to come from behind and play three sets but at the end emerged with a pair of victories in the first day of action of the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit.
On Friday morning, Canet-Sinal, winners of the first leg in Boca Chica, first defeated Laura Molina-Ivonne Soler of El Salvador 19-21, 21-15, 15-6. Then in the afternoon, they edged Mexicans Bibiana Candelas-Mayra Garcia 17-21, 21-18, 15-9.
In the first match, Canet suffered a left foot injury in the second set when they were ahead 17-14. After five minutes, she came back with renovated strength and led her side to the victory.
Guatemalans Maria José Orellana and Anna Ramirez also were successful in two outings. They first defeated Heydi Trana-Heisell Guadique of Nicaragua by score of 21-11, 21-16 in a battle between Central American rivals, and then beat Canadians Tammy Thomas-Kristina Long 21-16, 22-20.
The young Mexico (2) team of Diana Estrada-Rosario Reyes is also 2-0. They won 21-0, 21-0 over St. Vincent & Grenadines and then scored a major upset by defeating Puerto Ricans Sheila Lopez-Maria Teresa Ramos 27-25, 21-15.
Candelas-Garcia made an impressive debut by obtaining an easy win over the USA team of Rosalinda Masler and Kathleen Madden by score of 21-15, 21-8.
The team of St. Vincent & Grenadines did not show up because of travel difficulties.
