Default SWATCH FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 1 to 1 Energy Grand Slam 2008 in Swiss Alps

The USD 600,000 SWATCH FIVB World Tour 1 to 1 Energy Grand Slam 2008 in Gstaad, Switzerland, is fast approaching and there is an added element of excitement this year ahead of the super-successful annual event as it will host the Drawing of lots for the Olympic Games Beach Volleyball Tournaments.

The double-gender event runs through July 21-27 and with the end of the Olympic qualification period set for July 20 the eyes of the world will be on the beautiful mountain resort of Gstaad on Saturday, July 26, as the FIVB determines the composition of the Preliminary Round pools for the Beijing Games.

Ruedi Kunz, Director of the SWATCH FIVB 1 to 1 Energy Grand Slam 2008, says the excitement of the Olympic draw - which will be housed in the "Menuhin Festival" tent that can accommodate 2,000 spectators - will be complemented by some great Beach Volleyball and entertaining sideshows, including the appearance of famous Swiss pop stars and a classic comedy show.

Default Beijing 2008 Olympic Qualifying Completed, Swiss & Austrian Grand Slams Next

After staging 29 men's and 28 women's qualifying events for the Beijing 2008 Olympics the past 15 months, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour concludes its pre-Summer Games schedule the next two weeks with Grand Slam events in Switzerland and Austria.

With the Beach Volleyball competition at the Beijing Summer Games beginning in 18 days, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour takes center stage the next two weeks starting with the US$600,000 1to1 energy Grand Slam in Gstaad, Switzerland. Qualifying starts Tuesday leading to Saturday’s medal matches for women and the men’s "final four" contests Sunday.

The 1to1 energy Grand Slam will be staging a women's SWATCH FIVB World Tour for the ninth-straight season while the men will be competing for the eighth-consecutive year in the Swiss Alps. The 2007 Gstaad stop featured the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships where the American teams of Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers and Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh captured the men's and women's gold medals, respectively.

Default Swiss Women Highlight Qualifier in 1to1 energy Grand Slam

advanced from the women's qualifier. Switzerland's Muriel Graessli and Nadine Zumkehr, in their typical fashion, fought back from a one-set deficit to continue their hot streak. Last week in Marseille the Swiss duo advanced from the qualifier, then finished in seventh place after defeating the team which eventually placed second.

In front of a partisan crowd, the Swiss team dropped the opening set to The Netherlands' Danielle Remmers and Sophie Van Gestel, 22-20. That didn’t faze Graessli and Zumkehr, though, who last week won three matches after losing the first set. In the second set, Graessli and Zumkehr won 21-19 to force a tiebreaker. Late in the third set they watched Remmers and Van Gestel tie the set at 14-14, but a kill followed by an ace sealed the win.

"I was nervous at first," Graessli admitted afterwards. "I never really felt comfortable on the court. Maybe I put too much pressure on myself. But we saw that we could beat them, so that's how we started the second set. We never gave up, but they didn’t either. That’s how volleyball works, if you are stable inside you can beat any team. You always know you have a chance."
