Default Defensive techniques

I want to know what type of defensive technique people currently use to cushion a hard hit ball off of an attack. Many years ago at a college clinic I attended they used something that, at the time of contact you drop your platform straight down into your body. The players affectionately called it crotch batting. Then there was “dig and pull” where at the time of contact you essentially pull your elbows in and along your body (picture yourself pulling a drawer open with two hands). And lately it's shoot and drive where basically at contact the location of your hands once the platform is set, stays at that level. However the elbows break to make the platform parallel to the ground. The last two were most effective as they create back spin on the ball to reduce overpasses. What techniques have others used or heard of? Thanks and good luck in your seasons.

The basic dig is still the most used. It's merely holding your passing platform and still just leaning/bending downwards on contact to cushion the spike. In simplicity, it may require to drop to one knee in the action to cushion the pass. The desired effect is to create some back spin on the ball. While the focus of maintaining the passing platform should never be broken (bending elbows), unless a hookshot or a J-stroke dig is required.

If a player must move their upper body backwards to cushion the hit. Their passing platform still requires the downwards movement. It may require the player to litterally take a seat. Some players do a roll out of it, some don't.
