Default Prefect Brazilians Net Adelaide Australia Open Women’s Gold

Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca remained “perfect” in 2008 as the young Brazilian Beach Volleyball players captured the season opening event on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour women’s calendar by defeating compatriots Talita Antunes and Renata Ribeiro in the finals of the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open on Glenelg Beach.

The top-seeded Juliana and Larissa traveled to the South Australian capital with a “perfect” 20-0 match record from the Brazilian domestic tour and four titles and will leave the only island/nation continent on the planet with a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medal and a 6-0 mark.

In defeating the fifth-seeded Talita and Renata 21-13, 18-21 and 15-12 in 57 minutes, Juliana and Larissa shared the $28,000 first-place by winning their 20th SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medal to rank third on the all-time women’s international list. Brazilians Adriana Behar/Shelda Bede and Americans Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh are currently tied atop the list with 31 titles each.

“We had a lot of fun out their today,” said the 24-year old Juliana as she and Larissa defeated Renata and Talita for the second-time this week in the double-elimination Adelaide Australia Open. “It helped that Renata was not at her physical best due to an ankle (right) sprain. The first set was pretty easy, but we had to step it up after losing the second set. Getting out to a 5-0 lead in the deciding set really helped.”

Default Top seeds fall in Adelaide Australia Open Men's qualifier

It was a "tough" day for the top-seeded teams in the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Men's Qualification Tournament here Wednesday afternoon on Glenelg Beach as only three of the top-ranked tandems advanced to the opening Main Draw rounds with preliminary Beach Volleyball wins.

Only second-seeded Aleksandrs Samoilovs/Martins Plavins of Latvia, fifth-seeded Kirk Pitman/Jason Lochhead of New Zealand and seventh-seeded Bjorn Berg/Hannes Brinkborg of Sweden protected their seeds in the men's qualifier at the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open at the Moseley Square courts.

Pitman and Lochhead survived an upset bid by 21st-seeded Farid Mussa and Jesus Villafañe of Venezuela as the Kiwi's posted a come-from-behind 19-21, 21-19 and 16-14 win in 60 minutes over the South Americans, who were competing in their first-ever SWATCH FIVB World Tour event together. Pitman and Lochhead are competing in their 55th international event since forming their partnership in 2004.

Berg and Brinkborg, who formed their partnership last season, were also extended to three sets before posting a 21-14, 18-21 and 15-13 over Bo Soderberg and Anders Lund Hoyer. The 10th-seeded Danes had won three stops on the 2008 Australian domestic tour.

Default Dutch pair net Adelaide Australia Open Women's Main Draw berth

Adelaide, Australia, March 26, 2008 - Four of the top eight seeded teams advanced as expected to the "money" rounds for the first international Beach Volleyball event of the season with Marleen Van Iersel and Maloes Wesselink of the Netherlands posting the biggest seed-break-through here Wednesday during the final women's qualifying rounds of the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open.

Bronze medalists at the 2007 SWATCH FIVB World Championships for players under the age of 21 along with placing seventh at the European Championships last August in Spain, the 20th-seeded Van Iersel and Wesselink posted a 21-17 and 21-10 victory over fourth-seeded Sara Montagnolli and Sabine Swoboda of Austria to advance to Thursday's opening Main Draw rounds with seven other Beach Volleyball teams.

With two preliminary wins in the inaugural Adelaide Australia Open on Glenelg Beach at Moseley Square, Van Iersel and Wesselink have now advanced from three of 10 SWATCH FIVB World Tour qualifiers since 2005. Both players are 20-years old, but Wesselink will celebrate her 21st birthday next month (April 14).

Entering Thursday's competition Van Iersel and Wesselink will be looking for their second Main Draw win as the pair's only win in seven matches in the SWATCH "money" rounds was a 21-19 and 21-11 victory over Dutch compatriots Rebekka Kadijk and Merel Mooren last June in a FIVB stop in Warsaw, Poland.

Default Juliana returns to Australia, but this time to play Beach Volleyball

his week's SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in Adelaide is not Juliana Felisberta Silva's first trip to Australia and the young Brazilian is hoping the final result from her second journey "down under" is just as enjoyable as her first visit.

"I spent some time two years ago traveling in Australia and really enjoyed my experience," said the 24-year Juliana, who teams with Larissa Franca to form the top-ranked Beach Volleyball team on the international circuit for the past three seasons.

"In addition to enjoying several recreational activities in Queensland where I visited with Natalie Cook, I was impressed with the friendly nature of the Australian people," said Juliana, a two-time SWATCH FIVB World Championship medalist with Larissa. "Everyone made me feel right at home and helped me develop my English skills. Unlike my Beach Volleyball trips, this visit was a real vacation and a tremendous learning experience for me."

Since starting to play full-time on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour in 2004, Juliana and 25-year old Larissa have quickly developed into one of the top women's teams as the South Americans finished their first season as the No. 2-ranked behind the legendary Brazilian pair of Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar.

Default Brazilian women pace Adelaide Australia Open Main Draw competitors

Adelaide, Australia, March 27, 2008 - Three teams from Brazil posted unbeaten marks here Thursday during the opening women's Main Draw rounds of the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open along with two tandems each from China and Germany on Glenelg Beach at Moseley Square.

With four teams in the "money" rounds, the South Americans have a 7-1 mark heading into Friday schedule as the SWATCH FIVB World Tour returns to Australia for the first-time since the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane where Brazilians captured both the men's and women's gold medals.

With the inaugural Adelaide Australia Open being the year's first qualifying stop for the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the Glenelg Beach stop has added significance as all four Brazilian teams are competing for only two of the 24 spots available for their country in August's Summer Games in the Chinese capital.

The Beach Volleyball teams of Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes/Renata Ribeiro are currently the top two Brazilians teams in the Olympic rankings, but are being chased by the pairs of Shelda Bede/Ana Paula Connelly and the Salgado sisters (Carolina and Maria Clara).

Default Germans post upset Adelaide Australia Open Main Draw victory

With three women’s teams from Beach Volleyball-power Brazil scoring opening winner's bracket victories here Friday, it was the upset win by Germans Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig that highlighted the play in the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open on Glenelg Beach at Moseley Square.

After victories by top-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca, fifth-seeded Talita Antunes/Renata Ribeiro and 11th-seeded Shelda Bede/Ana Paula Connelly, Goller and Ludwing posted a 21-14 and 24-22 win over second-seeded Jia Tian and Jie Wang of China.

It was the second upset of the day for the Chinese tandems in the 32-team double-elimination Main Draw as Shelda and Ana Paula surprised third-seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang with a 21-19 and 21-11 victory to advance to a semi-final-qualifying match against the Germans in the first meeting ever between the two teams as the Brazilians formed their partnership late in the 2007 season.

Friday's first women's semi-final-qualifying match will guarantee Brazil its 155th spot in a SWATCH FIVB World Tour "final four" as the inaugural Adelaide Australia Open marks the 167th international event on the circuit since the start of world-wide competition in August 1992.

Default Brazil, USA men earn Adelaide Australia Open 'final four' berths

The teams of Harley Marques/Pedro Salgado of Brazil and Jake Gibb/Sean Rosenthal of the United States each posted a pair of wins here Friday to advance to the "final four" for this week’s season opening SWATCH FIVB World Tour event on Glenelg Beach.

The opponents for the Brazilians and Americans will be determined on the Moseley Square courts Saturday morning as Beach Volleyball teams from China, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States also remain in contention for semi-final berths in the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open as the international tour returns to Australia for the first-time since 2001.

While the fourth-seeded Harley and Salgado scored a 21-18 and 21-14 win in 38 minutes over eighth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands, the 18th-seeded Gibb and Rosenthal rallied from a pair of three-point deficits in the third and deciding set to defeat 14th-seeded Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann of Germany 21-18, 19-21, 17-15 in 64 minutes.

Default Brazilian women advance to Adelaide Australia Open semi-finals

Brazilian Beach Volleyball pairs of Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca and Shelda Bede/Ana Paula Connelly advanced through the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open's winner's bracket with 4-0 match marks to earn semi-final berths here Friday on Glenelg Beach at Moseley Square.

While Juliana and Larissa advanced as expected due to their top-seeding in the season-opening event on the 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour, the 11th-seeded Shelda and Ana Paula posted three upset wins to earn their first-ever international "final four" appearance together in only their second event together.

Juliana and Larissa, who have now advanced to their 44th SWATCH "final four" in 52 FIVB starts since forming their partnership in March 2004, posted a pair of three-set wins Friday, including a 10-21, 21-16 and 15-8 victory in 62 minutes over Brazilian rivals and fifth-seeded Talita Antunes and Renata Ribeiro.

In defeating Talita and Renata for the 20th-time in 23 SWATCH FIVB World Tour meetings since 2005, Juliana and Larissa were trailing 12-11 in the second set when an ankle injury slowed Renata and forced a five-minute "medical" time-out.

Default Americans & Chinese Net Adelaide Australia Open Men’s Semi-final Spots

With a pair of elimination wins here Saturday morning, SWATCH-FIVB World Champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of United States advanced to the men’s semi-finals of the US$350,000 Adelaide Australia Open along with Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu of China.

The second-seeded Dalhausser and Rogers ousted Beach Volleyball tandems from the Netherlands and Germany to advance to the “final four” of the season opening SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event on Glenelg Beach where the Americans will face fourth-seeded Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado of Brazil in the first semi-final match Saturday afternoon.

Dalhausser and Rogers, who claimed their world title last July in Gstaad, Switzerland, will be meeting Harley and Pedro for the second-time as the Americans won the only match between the two teams last July in the Berlin Grand Slam. At the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships, Dalhausser and Rogers won the gold medal by defeating Igor Kolodinsky Dmitri Barsout of Russia, who placed ninth this week as the top-seeded team in the inaugural Adelaide Australia Open.
