Third leg of NORCECA Circuit start today in El Salvador


The President of El Salvador National Sport Institute (INDES) declared officially open the third leg of the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit in a ceremony that took place Thursday night at Los Cebollines restaurant.



Mr. Jorge Hernandez Isussi welcomed the teams from thirteen countries participating in the event which take place throughout this weekend. He expressed the satisfaction of the official authorities of El Salvador for hosting this competition and praised the efforts of the directors of the National Volleyball Federation and the support of the NORCECA Confederation.



Dr. Manuel Lozano and Prof. Nelson Ramirez, President of the National Federation and Executive Director of NORCECA respectively, also pronounced words of welcome to the players.



Members of a local school performed a traditional dance at the end of the ceremony and deserved a big round of applause from the audience.



Before the opening ceremony, the authorities of NORCECA held the General Technical Meeting in the presence of Prof. Ramirez and Dr. Lozano plus Arnaldo Sanchez (Technical Director), Miguel Ramirez (Referee Delegate), Dr. Bernard Nau (Medical Delegate) and Dr. Roosevelt Comarazamy (Press Delegate).



Fourteen teams have been registered in the menís division while twelve will play in the womenís field. The matches start on Friday at 8:30 a.m. local time (10:30 EDT).

Default Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Canada won womenís pools

The womenís teams of Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Canada won their respective pools with 2-0 records advancing to Saturdayís double elimination main bracket. Teams El Salvador 1 and 2 also moved up with 1-1 mark along with USA and St. Lucia.



Puerto Ricans Sheila Lopez-Maritere Ramos won 21-12, 21-16 over St Kitts & Nevis (Shanicia Dyer-Glynis Wilkes) and then edged ESA 1 (Laura Molina-Ivonne Soler) 21-18, 23-21.



Costa Ricans Suzane Calderon-Tatiana Murillo beat ESA 2 (Frida Larios-Ana Aquino) 21-13, 14-21, 15-11, and then dispatched the Nicaragua team (Heydi Trana-Heysell Guadique) 23-21, 21-11.



Guatemalans Maria Orellana-Anna Ramirez won 21-12, 21-18 over El Salvador 3 (Karla Soler-Ingrid Rivas) 21-12, 21-18 and then edged the USA team (Erin Byrd-Stephanie Chapek) 21-18, 17-21, 15-13.



Finally, the Canadians Tammy Thomas-Kristina Long defeated St. Lucia (Dania Hamilton-Samantha Manai) 21-11, 23-21 and trounced Trinidad & Tobago 21-9, 21-

Default Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and USA won menís pools

The men team of Dominican Republic won Pool C of the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit in El Salvador by winning three matches on Friday.



Yewddys Perez-Charlin Vargas finished the day with a 21-18, 21-12 victory over Guatemala 1 (Jorge Bolanos-Erick Garrido) in a battle of unbeaten teams that both advanced to the second phase. They previously defeated El Salvador 3 (David Vargas-Carlos Leiva) 21-14, 21-19 and Trinidad & Tobago (Colin Charles-Jason Dennis) 21-14, 21-10.



Costa Ricans Andres Lopez-Jose Suarez also won their three matches in Pool D. In a decisive match for the top place, they beat Nicaragua (Winston Calderon-Francisco Castro) 21-14, 21-15. Previously, the Costa Ricans won 17-21, 21-11, 15-13 over Guatemala 2 (Jaime Ozuna-Ivan Pineda) and El Salvador 2 (Luis Morales-Carlos Escobar) 9-21, 22-20, 15-6.



Puerto Rico and USA won their two matches in pools A and B respectively also entering into the Saturdayís double elimination main bracket. Teams El Salvador 1 and Honduras also moved up with 1-1 marks.



Puerto Ricans Orlando Irrizarry-Roberto Rodriguez beat Aruba (Elmerlindo Robles-Jonathan Petrona (21-18, 21-12) and took a 21-17, 21-14 victory over El Salvador 1 (Geovany Medrano-Rafael Vargas).



Americans Ed Ratledge-David Fischer won 21-9, 21-12 over Honduras (Luis Baite-Walter Sanchez) and then rolled over St. Kitts & Nevis (Steadroy Collins-Kemoroy Percival (21-12, 21-14).

USA and El Salvador 1 became the first semi finalists of the womenís field in the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit at El Salvador. Both tandems won their two matches of Saturday advancing directly to the stage of the last four teams.



Americans (Erin Byrd-Stephanie Chapek) defeated Canada (Tammy Thomas-Kristina Long) 21-17, 21-15 and continued their success by downing Puerto Rico (Sheila Lopez-Maritere Ramos) 21-18, 21-19.



Backed by the local fans, El Salvador 1 (Laura Molina-Ivonne Soler) won against Costa Rica (Suzane Calderon-Tatiana Murillo) 21-12, 21-13 and then edged Guatemala (Maria Jose Orellana-Anna Ramirez) 21-15, 18-21, 15-12 in an emotional match.



The Guatemalans, who earlier had beaten St Lucia (Dania Hamilton-Samantha Manai) 21-8, 21-12, recovered to beat Canada in three sets (21-18, 15-21, 15-8) moving also to the semis.



Puerto Ricans Lopez-Ramos completed the semi finalists with a victory over the team of Costa Rica by score of 21-16, 21-14.

In Sundayís semi finals, USA will meet Guatemala and El Salvador 1 will face Puerto Rico.

Default Menís semi finals are ready for NORCECA Beach in El Salvador

USA, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and El Salvador 1 advanced to the menís semi finals of the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit at El Salvador.



Puerto Rico will be playing against Costa Rica, while the USA team will be pitted with host El Salvador 1 on Sunday.



The Americans (Ed Ratledge-David Fischer) and the Puerto Ricans (Orlando Irrizarry-Roberto Rodriguez) entered the final-four round through the winnersí bracket, while the other two teams benefited from the double-elimination system.



Ratledge-Fischer defeated El Salvador 1 (Geovany Medrano-Rafael Vargas) 21-15, 21-18 and then crushed Dominican Republic (Yewddys Perez-Charlin Vargas) 21-9, 21-13.



In the first match of Saturday, Irrizarry-Rodriguez beat Honduras (Luis Baide-Walter Sanchez) 21-17, 21-15 and followed with an easy triumph against Guatemala 1 (Jorge Bolanos-Erick Garrido) 21-11, 21-15.



Costa Ricans (Andres Lopez-Jose Suarez) recovered from losing their opening match 18-21, 16-21 to Guatemala 1, winning consecutive games over Honduras 28-30, 25-23, 15-8 and Dominican Republic 21-16, 21-19.



Salvadorians Medrano-Vargas recovered from an initial loss to USA and went on to beat Nicaragua (Winston Calderon-Francisco Castro) 21-18, 21-19 before defeating Guatemala 1 in three sets by score of 21-18, 19-21, 15-9.

Default USA dominated Beach Volleyball in El Salvador

The USA tandems dominated the 2008 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit in El Salvador by sweeping the gold medals in both genders on Sunday.



Americans Ed Ratledge-David Fischer, also winners in the first stop in Boca Chica, took the menís gold medal with a clear 21-16, 21-14 triumph over the Puerto Rican duo of Orlando Irrizarry-Roberto Rodriguez. They finished the event with 6-0 and 12-0 record in matches and sets respectively.



Fellow countrywomen Erin Byrd-Stephanie Chapek topped the womenís side with a 21-19, 21-13 win over host Laura Molina-Ivonne Soler of El Salvador 1.



In the matches for the bronze medals, Geovanny Medrano-Rafael Vargas, of El Salvador 1, defeated Andres Lopez-Jose Suarez, of Costa Rica, by score of 21-19, 16-21, 15-10 in the menís side, while in the womenís field it was Sheila Lopez-Maritere Ramos of Puerto Rico scoring an easy 21-14, 21-16 victory over Maria Jose Orellana-Anna Ramirez of Guatemala.



In their path to the gold medal match, Ratledge-Fischer defeated Medrano-Vargas (ESA 1) 21-17, 21-16 in the semi finals, and Irrizarry-Rodriguez beat Lopez-Suarez (CRC) by score of 21-17, 21-17.



Byrd-Chapek won over Orellana-Ramirez 21-13, 21-18 in semi finals and Molina-Soler defeated Lopez-Ramos 21-19, 21-17. The Americans lost only one set during the weekend and finished with a 6-0 mark. They were extended to three sets by Orellana-Ramirez in pool play.
