Athletes passionately express their feelings on Beijing 2008

Gathered in Lausanne, Switzerland, athletes from around the world who represent the voice of sportsmen and women on the International Olympic Committee, met to discuss how to address the challenging international backdrop into which the Olympic Games have been drawn in recent weeks. The Athletes' Commission members spoke passionately and from their own experiences about the inappropriateness of manipulating and using athletes as political tools. At the close of the meeting, they released the following statement.

"In 2001, the International Olympic Committee voted to award the Olympic Games in 2008 to Beijing, China. We believe the rationale for that choice – that the bid was the best one, technically excellent and that the Games should be brought to a country where one fifth of the world lives – was a sound rationale then, and remains sound today. Indeed, some of our Commission members were members of the IOC at the time and fully supported the choice of Beijing and still do.

Default Cuban Women aiming for the gold in Beijing

Cuban Women's Technical Director Antonio Perdomo is in a confident mood as the Beijing Games approach.

"We have the option for the gold in Beijing and we are certainly going after it," said Perdomo, who recognised there are six or seven teams also in with a shout to be crowned Olympic Champions.

"But we, of course, don't train to lose and we will play to get the ultimate goal," said Perdomo.

The Women's Olympic Tournament is set for August 9-23 and the Cuban Women, currently taking part in a training camp, will play in three tournaments ahead of the event, culminating with the FIVB World Grand Prix.

Following the 20-player national training camp divided into two groups – the first-team "orientales" and second-team "occidentales" – and now that China has declined to organize their traditional annual May tournaments, the Cubans are scheduled to play in the Abu Dhabi International Women's Volleyball Tournament through May 21-27 and then in the Montreux Volley Masters in Switzerland through June 4-8.

Default Cabral was a double winner

That’s the word to better describe the performance of the imported Dominican Milagros Cabral during the final series of the Puerto Rican Superior League, which concluded last Thursday with a sweep by her Pinkin of Corozal, new champions of the tournament. But Cabral not only took the award as Most Valuable Player of the final series, but yesterday also it was announced she won the same recognition for the regular series of LVSF.

For Cabral, to get both awards come as a vindication, because in 2006, when she played for the Ponce Lionesses, she was not 100 percent while recovering from a serious injury of her Achilles tendon.

“The injury was something very hard for me to overcome, both physically and psychologically. Now, here I am back again, after two years, and the truth is that it is incredible what we have done. When I played with Ponce I was about 40 percent, because I wasn’t ready, physically and mentally. It is not easy to recover the jump you had before the injury, but, thanks to God, here I am, and very proud to be part of the history of Pinkin of Corozal.”

The member also of the National Women’s Team of Dominican Republic, she dominated the poll (16 votes) to win the MVP award for the regular series. She had five more votes than Erin Moore, the imported American of Criollas, aho received 11votes. “My teammates helped me a lot and all the girls had a tremendous tournament. The truth is that Corozal deserved this (the championship),” reiterated Cabral. “I played very well! (laugh), I have to say that. I played very well, although I never imagined the series will be finished in four matches. We never lost the hope and the confidence in ourselves.” (From Primera Hora/Puerto Rico)
