Default Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico

The opening round action of the 2008 Men’s Pan American Cup began this afternoon in Winnipeg, Manitoba. For this occasion, Dominican Republic defeated their first rival Puerto Rico. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21.

After winning the first two sets, Dominican Republic could not close the third set. They put up a good fight but Puerto Rico kept playing with their block to end the set. However, Dominican Republic replied strongly in the fourth and last set.

Leading the way was Elvis Contreras of Dominican Republic. The captain cumulated 19 points, including 17 attacks. His teammate Jose Caceres Gomez followed him closely with 17 points and Victor Batista added 16. The best scorer of Puerto Rico, Jackson Rivera, cumulated 15 points and Ulises Maldonado and Edwin Aquino added 13 and 12 respectively.

Default Costa Rica fall 3 straight against powerful USA

The last match of the night featured the proven United States against the 61 ranked Costa Rica. The game ended after three sets, with a score of 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 in favor of the United States.

With a start of 7-0 in the second set, the United States kept the momentum and finished the game in 60 minutes. The tall United States team did not give any chance to the Costa Rican players.

Evan Patak from United States got a total of 11 points, while his teammate Nathan Meerstein got 10 points.

Default Canada sweeps Trinidad and Tobago 3-0

Trinidad and Tobago could not get much passed the home town team today. Team Canada took the lead during this match and won 3-0. Set scores were, 25-12, 25-13, 25-13.

Although Trinidad and Tobago started with an advantage of 8-6 in the first set, Team Canada did not wait any longer before stepping up and win the set. They were very consistent all game and did not give any chance to their opponent.

The best scorer was Toontje Van Lankvelt from Canada, with 11 points. He was also the best blocker, cumulating 5 kill blocks.

Coach Glenn Hoag said a few words after this match: “I am very proud of the team. They did not make a lot of mistake and adjusted very quickly as we did not have a lot of information on this team. The focus was consistent and it was fun to watch them play. We need to maintain that energy as the competition will get more and more intense.”

The captain Jeremy Wilcox added: “We practiced hard for the last three weeks and it showed. We came out strong on the court and minimized the mistakes. I am impressed by all our players.”

Default Canada blanked Puerto Rico for their second win

Canada achieved their second victory against Puerto Rico. The Canucks out-gamed the other squad for a win of 3-0. Set scores were 25-14, 25-15, 25-13.

Team Canada was all flames for this first game of the day. Performing in front of bleachers filled with school kids, they put up a great show for their young cheering crowd. The match ended is 63 minutes, sending the kids back on the school benches for the afternoon!

Dallas Soonias was the star of Canada with 13 attacks and 1 block, for a total of 14 points. His colleague Nicholas Cundy cumulated 11 points. On the Costa Rica side, Ulises Maldonado got a total of 10 points.

“We played very good volleyball and were linking our actions in a good way. The players subbing were also always ready to go on the court and did their job.” declared Glenn Hoag, Team Canada coach “The result was severe for the other team. They lost their concentration and missed a lot of serves”.

The captain of Puerto Rico, Julio Acevedo admitted the power of Team Canada: “Canada had a nice crowd cheering and it gave them a lift. They played well and we did a lot of mistakes. The tournament will get stronger and we need to be better prepared.”

Default Dominican Republic battled until the end with Trinidad & Tobago

Trinidad & Tobago put up a great fight against Dominican Republic for their second match. Despite all their efforts on the court, they could not manage to steal a set from the Dominican team. Set scores were 25-17, 22-22, 27-25, in favor of Dominican Republic.

The third day of the Men’s Pan American Cup started with a thrilling match. Trinidad & Tobago played hard and showed Puerto Rico how serious they were about this tournament. After 5 exciting sets, Puerto Rico declared victory. Set scores were 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 14-25, 13-15.

Default Mexico falls down to USA on its first match

Mexico had to face USA for their first match of the Men’s Pan American Cup. They put a great effort on the field but after 3 sets, the referee blew the whistle in favor of the USA. Set scores were 25-20, 25-11, 25-16, for USA.
