Default Brazil defeated Venezuela in straight sets

Brazil started its participation in the Women’s Pan American Cup with a triumph over Venezuela in straight sets by score of 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 in Pool B.

The stronger attacks of Brazilians Natalia Pereira and Regiane Bidias were the difference in the first and third sets when the winners dominated from start to finish.

Pereira led Brazil with 18 points and Jayce Andrade was the best for Venezuela with 10 tallies.

“I am very happy about starting with a victory,” said Luizomar Moura, the Brazilian coach. “This is a very strong competition and it is always good to start winning. Now we have to work on the mistakes we had today and improve in our next matches.”

“The mistakes hurt us a lot and we have to work to minimize that,” said Tomas Fernandez, the coach of Venezuela. “My team is very young and these games give us experience in our path to the Olympic Games.”

Cuba has been the dominant team in the history of the Women's Pan American Cup winning the gold medal in four of the six previous tournaments. USA and Brazil have won the other two competitions.

The seventh edition of this intercontinental competition is scheduled to start on Friday 30 in the cities of Mexicali and Tijuana, Baja California.

This is the fifth time, including the first three, that Mexico is hosting the event. Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico were the organizers of the fourth and fifth editions.

Default Puerto Rico beat Peru 3-0

Puerto Rico took advantage of its blocking and offense to dominate Peru 3-0 in the second match of Pool B. The score was 25-20, 25-17, 25-21.

The Puerto Ricans benefited from the Peruvian’s errors in their reception to build a comfortable lead in the first set. The South Americans started dominating the first part of the second set only to see their rivals to overcome the deficit with the effective attacks of Aury Cruz and Karina Ocasio.

The third set was dominated by the Puerto Ricans but their mistakes allowed Peru to keep it alive. At the end the result was in favour of Puerto Rico.

Ocasio led Puerto Rico with 16 points and Cruz added 10. Jessenia Uceda led Peru with 7 points.

“We are very glad with this result because we wanted to start with a win,” said Juan Carlos Nunez, the coach of Puerto Rico. “But I have to admit that my team made many errors.”

Francisco dos Santos, the coach of Peru, said: “My team worked hard but the lack of preparation affected the players. We came here without any games of preparation and also we have many young players without experience.”

Default Canada edged Cuba in five sets

Canada took advantage of an erratic night by Cuba combined with a big offensive job of Tammy Mahon and Emely Cordonier and won in five sets in the nightcap of Pool B.

The Canadians defeated the four-time champions of the Pan American Cup by score of 20-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-12, 17-15.

Cuba started dominating the match and looked like it was going to be an easy night, but the Canadians never gave up and kept their composure although the Cubans took the first set. Canada had a strong reaction in the next two sets and dominated in the fourth.

The fifth set was a battle between Mahon and Cordonier for Canada and Yuslieni Herrera and Yaima Ortiz for Cuba with the Canadians prevailing at the end with very effective attacks and well organized reception.

“It was a very intense match, but I am glad with the job executed by my players,” said Naoki Miyashita, the coach of Canada. “The victory is a big motivation for us to keep working hard the rest of the Cup.”

“It was totally a team effort,” said Mahon. “All the players contributed to this victory against a team like Cuba which always is strong.”

Sidarka Nunez scored five of her 37 points in the fifth set leading the Dominican Republic to a victory over USA by score of 20-25, 25-18, 25-27, 25-23, 15-8 in Pool A of the Women’s Pan American Cup.

Dominican Milagros Cabral had 17 points including five blocks, and Cindy Rondon and Annerys Vargas added 14 and 10 respectively.

Alexis Crimes was the best American with 22 tallies and Tracy Stalls added 17 including 6 blocks. Cynthia Barboza had 10 and Kristin Richards and Heather Hughes each had 9.

“It was a good experience for our young players,” said Tom Hogan, the USA coach. “It is good for them to be in pressure situations. I want to congratulate the Dominican Republic because their experience showed at the end.”

“I think we committed too many errors in our reception during the first half of the match, but we recovered in time to make the adjustments,” said Beato Miguel Cruz, the Dominican coach. “Once our reception improved we could use our strong attack and blocked much better.”

“It is a great victory for us because we have taken a big step towards next year’s World Grand Prix taking in consideration the composition of our pool,” added Cruz. “By defeating USA we have taken out of the way our main rival.”

Default Mexico won coming from behind

Mexico came from behind to defeat Costa Rica in five sets to close the first day of action in Pool A of the Women’s Pan American Cup.

The young Mexican squad won the first set only to see Costa Rica reacting to take the next two. Captain Martha Revueltas led the come back and finally the host team won by score of 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10.

Revueltas led four Mexican players in double figures with 26 points. Zaira Orellana, Migdalel Ruiz and Carolina Carranza had 17, 14 and 10 respectively. Costa Ricans Verania Willis and Karen Cope had 26 and 23.

“We knew it was going to be a very tough match,” said Luis Leon, the Mexican coach. “The first set was in our favour but then we lost the next two because of bad communication, but with a young team these things just happens. I am glad to start with this win.”

Default USA defeated Costa Rica 3-0

USA recovered from a painful loss in five sets to the Dominican Republic one night earlier and beat Costa Rica in straight sets (25-20, 25-10, 27-25) to even its record at 1-1 in Pool A of the Women’s Pan American Cup.

Alexis Crimes led USA with 12 points and Cynthia Barboza added 10. Karen Cope was the best Costa Rican with 13 points.

Both teams battled hard for the most part of the first set, but at the end the more experienced Americans prevailed with Crimes and Richards providing the key points.

The second set was one-sided for the USA Team which established a solid blocking. Barboza, Richards and Stalls were outstanding in the attack.

The Americans overcame two set-points and deficits of 11-16 and 20-23 to win the third set when Olsovsky served an ace and Costa Rican libero made an unforced error while passing.

“Our goal is to improve with every match and to finish among the top four,” said Tom Hogan, the American coach. “After the heartbreaking loss to Dominican Republic last night, I feel satisfied with this victory.”

“We had a lot of up and downs during the match,” said Braulio Godinez, the Costa Rican coach. “We made too many errors. For the moment our goal is to recapture the shape we had two years ago.”
